3.0.0(16)

Pick & Reject culling and a new app icon

Added Pick and Reject marks with a Pick Filter and a one-step way to move rejects to the Trash, introduced a new app icon, made the Tag Health Check clean up only after you confirm, and fixed several filter and menu issues.

Added

  • Added Pick and Reject marks for culling: press P to pick, X to reject, and U to clear, or press the same key again to remove a mark the image already has. With multiple images selected, all of them are marked at once; marks are also available from the Image menu and the thumbnail and main image context menus. Marks are stored in Picser’s local tag library and follow images when they’re moved, and turning on “Preserve Picser tags and marks on copies” keeps them on batch copies (requires Pro; if your entitlement lapses, existing marks stay visible but can’t be changed or filtered).
  • Thumbnails now show a Pick (green flag) or Reject (red cross) badge in the top-left corner, and rejected thumbnails are dimmed, consistently across all three thumbnail layouts. A new Pick menu in the toolbar reflects the current image’s mark. A toast confirms each mark, and VoiceOver reads the mark state aloud.
  • Added a Pick Filter to the toolbar with All Images, Picks Only, and Hide Rejects. It combines with tag filters and is set separately for each window (requires Pro).
  • Added “Move Rejected Images to Trash…” to the Image menu and the Pick Filter menu, with the image count in its title. It covers every rejected image in the current tag filter results, whether or not Hide Rejects is on, and works like batch delete: it asks for confirmation, lets you cancel remaining items and retry failed ones, and moves files to the Trash by default (requires Pro).
  • Added a Pick & Reject section to the Keyboard settings that lists the keys and offers “Move to next image after marking” (off by default; applies only when marking a single image; requires Pro).
  • Added an animated Picser mark to the welcome screen, the About page in Settings, and the About Picser window. Its dot blinks and looks toward your pointer; in About, it also cycles between the dot, a Pick flag, and a Reject cross, and clicking it skips to the next one. With Reduce motion turned on in macOS, it doesn’t blink or cycle on its own, but clicking still switches it. About Picser in the menu bar now opens a new window, with the tagline “Image viewing. Pure and simple.” under the app name.

Changed

  • Picser has a new app icon. It keeps the white single-line P and the blue tones of the previous icon, so you can still spot it in the Dock at a glance. The sun and two layers of waves inside the P’s bowl are now a single ochre-orange dot, like an eye looking toward the next image, a nod to what Picser is for. The P’s stroke is bolder with a shorter stem, and the background is a deeper ink-blue gradient. The old waves blurred together at small sizes; the new icon has just three elements, the background, the P, and the dot, so it stays crisp in the Dock, Finder lists, and other small sizes. On macOS 26, it also picks up the system’s Liquid Glass lighting.
  • The Tag Health Check now only checks and never deletes on its own. “Run Scan Now” repairs files that were moved and lists images that can’t be found; their records, tags, and Pick and Reject marks are deleted only after you click “Remove Missing Records…” and confirm. Previously a scan deleted them right away, so if an external or network drive wasn’t connected, the tags on every image on it were wiped. Records on drives that aren’t connected are now listed separately as offline and are never removed.
  • When a filter change hides the current image, Picser now moves to the nearest image after it instead of jumping back to the first one. With Hide Rejects on, pressing X repeatedly works through images one by one.
  • The message shown when no images match now covers both tag and pick filters, and “Clear all filters” also clears the Pick Filter. Keyboard shortcuts no longer stop working entirely in this state: you can still switch or reopen folders and press Esc.
  • The Settings window now resizes to fit the current page, animating smoothly when you switch pages or expand and collapse panels, with no scroll bar when the content fits on screen. Settings also reopens to the page you last viewed.
  • The purchase panel now sizes itself to its content as well. “What’s included” now presents four groups of Pro features: Picks & rejects, Tags & smart filters, Crop & export, and EXIF & slideshow, and notes that the yearly subscription and lifetime license unlock exactly the same features. When opened from a specific Pro feature, the matching group is listed first.
  • The toolbar Delete button is now red when available. The current-image toolbar buttons are now ordered Tags, Pick, Delete, and on macOS 26 and later, Delete sits in its own group.

Fixed

  • Fixed an issue where switching folders with a filter on cleared the restored browsing position and jumped back to the first image.
  • Fixed an issue where, with multiple windows open, opening a folder in one window made tags disappear from images in the others. Also fixed tags removed elsewhere still showing after the folder was reloaded.
  • Fixed the All Tags tag filter mode quietly loosening: when a selected tag was no longer used by any image in the current folder, it was dropped from the criteria, so “has both A and B” became “has A”. All selected tags are now kept, the results are empty when nothing matches, and the filter panel lists such tags with a count of 0 so you can deselect them.
  • Fixed a “Synced tags for N photos” message appearing in every window each time a folder was opened, and the scan result appearing at launch. These background tasks no longer show a message when they succeed, and still do when they fail.
  • Fixed long messages at the top of the main window being truncated with an ellipsis. They now wrap to up to three lines, and short messages still use a single line.
  • Fixed the Open button being unavailable after selecting a folder in the Open Image/Folder panel, which only allowed choosing image files.
  • Fixed menu items for sorting, thumbnail layout, the Pick Filter, and more not showing a checkmark in the menu bar and toolbar. Quick tags and Pick and Reject items in context menus now use native macOS checkmarks too.
  • Fixed keyboard shortcuts not appearing in the menu bar. Shortcuts now follow the menu item title, such as “Rotate 90° CCW (⌘[)” and “Pick (P)”, and update when you customize them.
  • Fixed the shortcut recorder on macOS 26 and 27 sometimes failing to record keys or showing off-center text. Your saved custom shortcuts are unchanged.
  • Fixed feature descriptions in the purchase panel staying in the previous language after switching the interface language while the panel was open.
  • Fixed the EXIF panel and some other open views staying in the previous language after switching the interface language. The change now takes effect right away; only some system menus update after you restart the app.
  • Fixed visual artifacts when opening or closing the EXIF panel: a vertical line no longer lingers on the main image after the panel closes, and no dark band sweeps across the panel as it opens. A stray divider line on the panel has also been removed.

Performance

  • Merging tags now reloads only the images that carry the merged tags. After browsing many images, merging tags no longer ties up the tag library for a long time, so tagging and Pick and Reject marks don’t have to wait in line.
2.8.0(15)

AVIF, JPEG XL, and HEIF support, plus a Japanese interface

Added browsing for AVIF, JPEG XL, and HEIF images, along with a Japanese interface.

Added

  • Added browsing for AVIF, JPEG XL (.jxl), and HEIF (.heif) images, including folder scanning, sorting, thumbnails, Quick Preview, EXIF, and exporting a copy after cropping or rotating. These formats can’t yet be overwritten in place or chosen as export formats.
  • Added a Japanese interface. Choose “日本語” in Settings, or keep Follow System to use Japanese automatically when your Mac is set to Japanese.

Changed

  • The EXIF panel now shows the format of .tif files as TIFF.
  • Language options now always appear in their own language (English / 简体中文 / 日本語), whatever interface language is active.

Fixed

  • Fixed an issue where the rating hint at the bottom of the About settings page was truncated to a single line in English.

Unified selection, batch file operations, and cache management

Added unified multi-selection, Copy to Folder and Move to Folder, and a disk cache that can clean itself up by size or age, while making deletion safer for your files.

Added

  • Added unified image selection across all three thumbnail layouts: click, Command-click to add or remove, Shift-click for a range, Command-A to select all, and Esc to clear.
  • Added Copy to Folder and Move to Folder. Files with the same name can be kept, skipped, or replaced; progress is shown throughout, remaining items can be canceled, and only the failed items can be retried after a partial failure.
  • Added Command-C to copy the current or selected image files so they can be pasted straight into Finder.
  • Added a disk cache size limit (256 MB, 500 MB, 1 GB, or 2 GB) and optional automatic cleanup of items not used in the last 7, 30, or 90 days. The default stays at 500 MB with age-based cleanup off.

Changed

  • Improved thumbnail selection styling: a checkmark in the bottom-right corner and a light tint mark selected images, while a blue border marks the image being previewed. With a single selection, arrow keys move the selection; with multiple images selected, they only switch the preview and keep the selection.
  • Improved batch delete so items that haven’t started can be canceled, results summarize succeeded, failed, and skipped items, and only failed items or failed tag-data updates can be retried.
  • The tag editor now tags the images selected in the browser. When copying, you can keep Picser tags, and tags follow files when moved; the delete action in the tag filter panel now clearly states that it deletes all filter results (requires Pro).
  • Cache settings now list the disk metadata cache, memory image cache, and directory permissions separately, show loading and cleanup results, and explain that clearing never deletes your original images.

Fixed

  • Fixed an issue where the item count in the batch delete menu could differ from the confirmation sheet.

Performance

  • Cache size and age checks run in the background without slowing down launch or browsing, and a single cache file that fails to clean up no longer stops the rest of the cleanup.

Security

  • If moving to the Trash fails, Picser no longer falls back to permanent deletion. Files are permanently deleted only when you explicitly choose to.

Crop controls are interactive again

Fixed an issue that prevented the crop handles, aspect-ratio options, Save button, and Cancel button from responding.

Fixed

  • Fixed an issue where the scroll-wheel event layer could block the crop interface after the image-loading improvements, preventing the crop handles, aspect-ratio options, Save button, and Cancel button from responding.

New icon, multi-window comparison, and smoother image loading

Introduced a new app icon, added a choice for how externally opened images use windows, and improved large-image loading, switching, slideshows, and zooming.

Added

  • Picser now has a brand-new app icon for a more distinctive and consistent visual identity.
  • Added an external-open window option. When opening images from Finder or other external sources, you can reuse the current window or always create a new one, keeping existing windows available for side-by-side comparison.

Changed

  • Improved image loading and caching with viewport-sized previews, neighboring-image preloading, and full-resolution loading when details are needed, making large-image switching, slideshows, and zooming smoother.
  • Improved transitions between image resolutions so zoom, rotation, mirroring, cropping, and the minimap remain stable.
  • Improved Settings localization refresh, picker layout, and toolbar overflow-menu titles.

Fixed

  • Fixed an issue where opening an image externally could reuse and restore a minimized empty window.
  • Fixed an issue where caches and display state might not refresh promptly after an image was overwritten or reloaded.

  • Added preset tag colors with support for assigning, clearing, and batch-adjusting colors across tag lists, filter panels, and thumbnail markers.
  • Added folder-scope choices when opening a single image and loading images from the same folder: authorize the current folder, a broader parent folder, or only open the selected image.

Changed

  • Improved Tag Settings and the tag filter panel with color filtering, saved smart filters, and clearer sections for stats, management, batch actions, and inspections.
  • Improved directory permission memory so granted parent folders can be reused for child folders, with the most specific valid scope preferred.
  • Improved toolbar icons, Pro badges, entitlement saving, and subscription grace-period copy to reduce repeated prompts and unnecessary writes.

Fixed

  • Fixed an issue where the Settings window could appear blank or use mismatched colors after switching from Dark to Light appearance.
  • Fixed an issue where holding the Space key could repeatedly toggle and flicker the Quick Preview window.
  • Fixed quick tagging so assigned tags can be removed again, and reduced the risk of startup tag inspection cleaning up missing-image associations by mistake.
